Joint Lesson Teaching
Teaching Responsibilities for Grade 1:
- 1. At least three short stories per semester
- Prep for: 1st Semester English Storytelling Contest
- 2. Spelling Bee
- Prep for: 2nd Semester Spelling Bee Contest
- 3. Reading Theater:
- 1st Semester: Bingo, Come Home!
- 2nd Semester: Red Roses, Blue Violets
- Prep for: 2nd Semester Reading Theater Presentation
- 4. Possibly prep for singing a Christmas song.

Schedule Outlines
Thursday Sep 18
- 10.35-11.15
- 11:20-12:00
Today's theme: Spelling Bee. Choose one or two words from each section below and write them on board (six words total?) Then run a spelling bee where they must stand in front of the board (backs to the board, don't look!) and spell the words for “points”.
- 10 min: Read “Mud!” Phonics story.
- 10 min: Play with blocks: Jenga
- 10 min: Read Bingo, come home!
- 10 min: Mock spelling Bee with words on board
- 10 min: Read “Mud!” again. Ask questions.
- 10 min: Play with wooden blocks. Can you build a tower? How high?
- 10 min: Read Bingo, come home!
- 10 min: Sing “Jingle Bells”.
Mon 9/15 9:35
- (40 min) Bingo, Come Home!
- 10 min – sing the bingo song, with actions.
- I used 'sun points' to encourage everyone to sing. By the 2nd or 3rd round everyone was singing and clapping along, even Alan!
- 10 min – Read page 1
- We read the first page of the story.
- 10 min – Where is bingo?
- To aid the comprehension of the story. Hide a small thing *(which is bingo) and the children must find it.
- 10 min – Classroom management
- Unfortunately a significant amount of time was spent today and last class in classroom management.
- However, I have also noticed that today is very good, their behavior is improving and I am learning how to mange them (these specific students). So I don't think this will take a significant amount of class time going forward.
Wed 9/10 10:35-11:15
- (10 min) Alphabet + 1 word
- Aligns with: L0 Posters “Alphabet”
- (10 min) Eight colors of balloons. [Alignment:Lesson 1 Class Video]
- Have (eight) balloons. Name the colors.
- What's your favorite color? My favorite color is purple.
- Say: Here. It's a gift. Respond: It's a (color) balloon.
- (10 min) Rainbow. [Alignment:L1 ExLab Video]
- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
- What colors are on the rainbow? Have a list of colors and other things, and they are 'in' or 'out'.
- Colors page (from colors, shapes, …)
- (10 min) Hopscotch.
- Alignment: L0 Picture Cards (Animation)
- Needs chalk. Go outside. If we can't go outside, we can extend other lessons or adapt via dice and creating a boardgame on the blackboard.
Wed 9/10 11:20-12:00
- (10 min) Write “Boy”, “Girl”, “Teacher”.
- Aligns with: L1 Vocabulary
- Teacher writes names on the board. Students can write “boy”, “girl”, or “teacher” beside or under.
- (10 min) Count Beans sheet (after shapes in Wanny's book)
- Aligns with: Posters “Numbers”
- Have to talk about numbers, count the beans, and put them in the jars.
- Can “time” each student. Who is faster?
- (10 min) Musical Instruments
- Aligns with: L1 vocabulary
- Have a triangle and a pair of shakers. Have at least one of each per student.
- Can play a simple beat. Students must say “triangle” and “shakers” to get each one.
- (10 min) Hello, Goodbye!
- Aligns with: L1 Vocabulary
- Hello, Goodbye to enter and exit classroom. Now, ask the students to try it.
- As an ongoing concern, give them extra points when they accurately use this English.
