People put something on the table for the ghost who doesn't have something to eat.
Ghost Month is during 7/01~7/30 in the Chinese calendar.

And the most important day in it is Zhongyuan Festival.There's a saying goes: 'On the first day of the seventh month, the Ghost Gate opens; on the thirtieth day, the Ghost Gate closes. People will hold Pudu to let the lonely ghosts to get something to eat. According to popular beliefs, during this time, the gates between the living and the afterlife open, enabling communication with departed loved ones. The history of Pudu

Water lantern

The History of Releasing Water Lanterns

This activity is introduced to people in China during 618–690 AD.

The tradition of releasing water lanterns usually takes place on the eve of the Zhongyuan Festival.
